The Klias River is situated on the Klias Peninsula. It is here at the Klias Wetland where you will be able to watch unique looking proboscis monkeys. These creatures have been gaining popularity among the tourists due to their one of a kind looks. The Klias Wetland is largely populated by these monkeys. This will soon become a famous ecotourism site in Sabah.

Overview

The Klias River cruise is one of the activities most looked forward by tourists when visiting Sabah. On the cruise, expect to see the unique proboscis monkeys of the Klias Wetlands. The proboscis monkeys are only found in Borneo. The river cruise begins in the afternoon and usually ends in the evening. It is not hard to recognize a proboscis monkey as it is the one with a long nose and a bulging belly.

The river cruise begins at 4pm in the afternoon and will take a period of about 2 hours. Shortly into the river cruise, you will be able to see monkeys and other wildlife around the trees in the wetlands. Do watch out for long-tailed macaques, otters, crocodiles and silver-leaf monkeys that commonly wander around in the waters of the mangrove forest. Visitors are also in luck to watch some species of birds such as the hornbill, gray heron, eagle, white heron, eagle as well as the kingfisher.

Upon completion of the cruise, you will be sent back to the jetty for a sunset dinner. Usually fresh seafood will be served. This cruise is also special because you will be able to watch thousands of fireflies light up the riverbanks as you fill up your stomach. Accommodations are available at the Klias area. If there are more places that you want to visit in Sabah, do not worry about the accommodation as accommodations in Sabah are plentiful due to the large number of visitors to the state each year.

Transport

The Klias river is located about 100 kilometers south of the capital of Sabah, at the district of Beaufort. The transfer from Kota Kinabalu will take about an hour and a half. Transport will be provided by the tour operator that you book with.
