Location

The Mataking Island is about 40 minutes ride east of Semporna where the peace and tranquility of the luxurious Reef Dive Resort awaits you. It is at Mataking Island where you can enjoy hassle-free and diverse macro-diving as well as daytrips to the world renowned Sipadan Island which is only about 80 minutes ride away on a speedboat.

Overview

There is no reason why you should not come to Mataking Island. With its crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and top-class resort, the island of Mataking is the perfect place for a getaway. This place is just ideal for both avid divers and non-divers. Divers can head towards the Eel Garden, Coral Garden, Nudibranch Garden, Turtle Playground, Lobster Lair and Hump Head Point.

For non-diving activities, one can indulge in a luxurious pampering experience at Jamu Spa. Other than that, there are also activities like batik painting, kayaking, canoeing and jungle trekking, just to name a few. An activity not to be missed at the Mataking Island is the 20 minutes walk from the main island to the Pulau Mataking Kecil. The best time to take this walk is in the morning when the tides are low. In this condition, it allows you to walk on a sandy stretch which leads you directly to the smaller island. With the sea surrounding you on both sides of the walkway, it feels as though you are walking on water.

When you plan to get back on the main island, do climb up the wooden observation tower to enjoy a breath-taking view of the Mataking Island and its surrounding areas. Do not miss the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Mataking's famous 'Underwater Post Office' which is the only one in Malaysia. It was in March 2006 when the resort decided to sink Mataking 1, an old 40-foot wooden cargo ship to create an artificial reef. It was also to serve as a unique underwater mailbox. Divers seal their mail in waterproof vacuum bag and post it underwater. There are simply too many reasons for you to come to Sabah. Accommodations in Sabah are numerous and you should not worry about not having a place to put up during your visit here.

Transport

The journey from Tawau to Semporna by road takes about an hour. From Semporna, the speedboat transfer to Mataking takes approximately 45 minutes.
