Location
The Aquarium and Marine Museum is located in the University Malaysia Sabah campus. It is an advanced
marine museum which is a great addition to the campus.
Overview
The Aquarium and Marine Museum was established in 1995 by the Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI).
The Borneo Marine Research Institute aims to promote research, education and training in conservation
and sustainable development of marine resources through the establishment of the museum.
The museum is located within the Borneo Marine Research Institute Complex, just beside the Sepanggar
Bay are. The Aquarium and Marine Museum has the best aquarium facilities in the whole of Borneo Island.
Among the facilities available at the museum are the live open water reef exhibition centre, free
standing exhibition tanks, live shallow reef exhibition, mangrove walk, contemporary Marine and
Maritime Museum, Multimedia Interactive Information Kiosk as well as a Sipadan deep dive diorama.
Other than the museum, there are many other places to visit in Kota Kinabalu. The most anticipated
attraction would be the Kinabalu Park which is Malaysia's first Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is also
at the park which houses the renowned Mount Kinabalu. At the park, you can opt for jungle trekking
other activities related to adventures and sports. You can also head towards the islands to rest and
relax. Famous islands in Sabah include Mataking Island, Kapalai Island, Mabul Island and Sipadan Island.
These are great diving spots. Hence, be sure to bring along your camera and its waterproof cover. Other
than the islands, you should not miss going to the Sepilok Orang Utan sanctuary. The sanctuary is located
in Sandakan. Accommodations are plentiful as there are many hotels in Kota Kinabalu. Thus, do not worry
about not having a place to stay. There are also shopping malls in Kota Kinabalu which may interest you.
Transport
Getting to the University Malaysia Sabah is simple. It is located just three kilometers from the
city. You can either drive there or take a cab there. Bus No. 5A will also make a stop there.
